Roulette is a casino game that involves betting on the color red or black, odd or even, and whether numbers are high (19-36) or low (1-18). Players must place their chips before the dealer announces ’no more bets!’.
Players can also make inside bets, which are placed on small groups of numbers on the inner part of the table. The odds for these bets are lower than for outside bets.
Origin
The origin of roullete is unclear, but there are several theories. The most common is that the game was invented by 17th-century French mathematician Blaise Pascal, who stumbled upon it while searching for a perpetual motion machine. It is thought that Pascal combined a gaming wheel with the Italian game Biribi.
There is also a theory that roulette was derived from ancient Chinese games. The Chinese game involved arranging 37 animal figurines into a magic square with numbers that totaled 666. These animals were then rolled on a board, and the results were transmitted to Europe by Dominican monks. These monks may have then adapted the game to create modern roulette. This version of the game would be popular with French aristocrats in the 18th century, and is largely what we know as modern roulette today.
Variations
Roulette variations differ in terms of rules, betting options and payouts. They can also be differentiated by their house edge. Some variants are more suited to new players while others offer additional bets and special rules. These differences often determine the overall experience of the game. For example, Double Ball Roulette follows the European Roulette format but uses two balls instead of one. Lighting Roulette is another variant that combines the European layout and standard bets with a bonus game that delivers higher payouts. IGT’s Triple Bonus Spin Roulette also offers a bonus game that pays up to 1:12,000 for a straight win.
