Origin

Roulette is a game that involves spinning a wheel with 38 (or 37 on modern European/Latin American tables) divisions and rolling a ball into one of them. The game has been a staple of casinos and gambling houses since the 18th century. There are many theories about its origin, with the most popular being that 17th-century French mathematician Blaise Pascal invented it in the course of his attempts to produce a perpetual motion machine. Other theories point to supposed ancestors including English games like roscoe, portique and even-odd, as well as Italian games such as hoca and biribi. However, these claims are not supported by historical records.
